Nei primi anni del 2000 The Pirate Bay, una piattaforma svedese di file sharing che consentiva agli utenti di condividere film e musica, ha visto aumentare a dismisura la fruizione delle sue pagine. Il processo contro i suoi fondatori ha però dato il via a una lotta impari tra Hollywood e tre pirati informatici dalla mentalità aperta e molto differenti dall'immagine che i media e gli avvocati dell'accusa hanno provveduto a dipingere.
